Technology

Building integrated photovoltaics: the perovskite solar façade.

Building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) are solar modules that also do the job of a building component, such as glazing or cladding. Instead of adding panels to a finished building, the envelope itself becomes an energy-generating façade.

Perovskites are a family of thin-film photovoltaic materials that can be built into glass. In a façade, that allows solar generation with a uniform, architectural appearance, designed in from concept stage.

Tabernair’s role is the system around the module. As System Architect and Design Authority, we define how perovskite modules are integrated into the façade, and we hold the design together from concept to delivery. As Europe Commercialisation Partner, we bring the system to European projects.

Patent-pending façade system

Fire-engineered BIPV: our patent-pending façade system.

Our patent-pending fire-engineered façade system for perovskite BIPV is designed to bring solar generation into the façade while addressing the fire-performance requirements of the building envelope.

Patent status: patent-pending. Singapore patent application SG 10202603310T, filed 19 September 2026.

Fire testing: what each standard tells you.

Fire performance only means something next to a named test. Façade fire performance is assessed at two different levels, and they answer different questions.

Reaction to fire (product level): EN 13501-1 classifies how a building product contributes to a fire: how readily it ignites, how far flame spreads, and how much smoke and how many flaming droplets it produces.

System fire tests (façade level): large-scale tests such as BS 8414 (UK) and NFPA 285 (US) assess a complete façade build-up, including how fire spreads across and through the system.

A product classification is not a system test result, and a system test result is not a product classification. We publish the status of each separately.

Certification

Certified perovskite BIPV modules

The perovskite BIPV modules used in our façade system are TüV/IEC-certified under our OEM manufacturing partner. The certificates are held by the OEM, not by Tabernair. Standards and certificate references are listed in the BIPV Technical Summary.
